Geojit Financial Services Trading Hours

The Short Answer First

Geojit Financial Services routes orders to SEBI-recognised exchanges, so trading hours are set by the exchange, not the broker. Equity, F&O and currency derivatives on NSE and BSE run 09:00 to 17:00 IST Monday to Friday, with cross-currency derivatives extending to 19:30 IST. Commodity hours on MCX are longer and vary by contract.

Session length matters less than what happens inside it: when the market opens, when liquidity thins, and when your money actually comes back.

Exchange Session Timings

SegmentPre-openRegular sessionPost-close
Equity (NSE/BSE)09:00-09:08 IST09:15-15:30 IST15:40-16:00 IST
Equity F&O-09:15-15:30 IST-
Currency derivatives-09:00-17:00 IST-
Cross-currency derivatives-09:00-19:30 IST-
Commodity (MCX)-From 09:00 IST, contract-dependent-

A few practical notes. Equity pre-open has three phases, and orders placed at 09:08 cannot be modified, only cancelled. Currency futures open 15 minutes before the cash equity market, which catches out traders who assume the whole exchange starts at 09:15. MCX energy and metals contracts often trade into the evening, so commodity hours need checking contract by contract rather than assumed.

FYI
Exchange timings are amended from time to time, particularly around results season and budget days. The schedules above are the standard session; intraday extensions are announced by the exchange and passed on through the platform.

A Round-Turn Priced Out

A single NSE equity intraday round-turn on Geojit's plan-based flat structure costs Rs 20 per executed trade, meaning Rs 40 in and out before statutory charges. Delivery equity sits at Rs 0 brokerage.

  • Account opening: Rs 0
  • Equity delivery brokerage: Rs 0
  • Intraday and F&O brokerage: flat Rs 20 per trade, plan-based
  • Direct mutual funds: free
  • AMC on demat: roughly Rs 400 per year
  • Debit transaction charge: about 0.02%, minimum Rs 15-20, maximum Rs 40

The debit transaction charge applies when shares leave your demat, so if you buy on Monday and sell on Friday, that charge lands on the sell side and shows up in the contract note, not the order screen. On small ticket sizes the Rs 15-20 floor dominates the percentage.

When the Market Pauses

Trading halts happen. Circuit breakers on individual scrips, exchange-wide halts during extreme moves, and scheduled closures all interrupt the session, and the broker has no discretion over any of it. Geojit's platform mirrors exchange status.

Common reasons a session stops or shortens:

  • Index-wide circuit breaker triggered by a 10%, 15% or 20% move
  • Scrip-specific price bands or surveillance actions
  • Exchange holidays, published annually by NSE and BSE
  • Technical halts on the exchange side, which can last minutes to hours

Stop-losses do not protect you through a halt. If trading in a scrip is suspended at your stop level, the order cannot fill until the session resumes, and the gap is yours to absorb. Sizing positions so a halt is survivable matters more than any platform feature.

Funding, Settlement and When Money Moves

Geojit settles exchange-traded business in INR. Deposits come through UPI, net-banking, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS, so funding is near-instant during banking hours and UPI works around the clock within the NPCI per-transaction limit.

Withdrawals are where session timing bites. Because the exchange settles on a T+1 basis for most equity trades, sale proceeds are typically available for withdrawal on the following working day. Add the bank's processing time and a Friday sale often means Tuesday money. That is a structural feature of Indian market settlement, not a broker delay, and it applies to every SEBI-registered member.

QUICK TIP
If cash flow timing matters to you, treat T+1 settlement as the baseline and plan around weekends and exchange holidays. Test the withdrawal path with a small amount first so the real end-to-end duration is known.

The Regulator's Role, and Its Limits

Geojit is a SEBI-registered domestic full-service broker, a member of NSE and BSE, and a NSDL and CDSL depository participant. It is a listed company with roots back to 1987, formerly known as Geojit BNP Paribas, and no major SEBI actions were verified at our review.

What that oversight does not cover: retail forex and CFD trading outside exchange-traded INR pairs sits outside the permitted framework in India, and the RBI Master Direction on Electronic Trading Platforms bars operating a forex ETP without RBI authorisation. Margin forex trading is not a permitted purpose under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme either, which caps outward remittance at USD 250,000 per resident per financial year with 20% TCS above Rs 10 lakh. Verification of any entity is a check against the regulator's own register.

Hours Versus Usability

Geojit's session windows are ordinary; the differentiator is the order route behind them. The Selfie app and web platform execute into exchange matching engines, so slippage depends on market depth at the moment of the click. In the opening fifteen minutes of equity trading and the first minutes of currency futures, spreads widen and book depth thins. A Rs 20 flat fee is a bargain on a large order and a tax on a small one.

Where this suits you:

  • You trade NSE and BSE cash, F&O or exchange-traded currency derivatives
  • You hold delivery positions and value the Rs 0 delivery brokerage
  • You want a broker with a domestic depository footprint and local support
  • You are comfortable with T+1 settlement for withdrawals
  • Your average ticket size is large enough that the flat Rs 20 is immaterial

Where a different setup deserves a look:

  • Your average order is small and the Rs 15-20 debit floor is a meaningful drag
  • You need swap-free or Islamic account terms, which Geojit does not offer
  • You want automated or algorithmic order types beyond what the platform exposes
  • You trade after IST hours, when Indian exchange sessions are closed
  • You are seeking access to international markets and are prepared to meet the regulatory conditions attached to that

Questions

What time does Geojit open for trading in currency derivatives?

+

Currency derivatives on NSE and BSE run 09:00 to 17:00 IST, Monday to Friday. Cross-currency derivatives extend to 19:30 IST. The 09:00 start is fifteen minutes earlier than the cash equity session.

Does Geojit trade on weekends?

+

No. Exchange-traded segments operate Monday to Friday. UPI funding works on weekends, so deposits are possible, but no orders execute until the next trading day. Scheduled exchange holidays, published annually by NSE and BSE, are full closures.

How long does a Geojit withdrawal take?

+

Sale proceeds follow T+1 settlement for most equity trades, so funds are typically withdrawable the next working day. The bank transfer itself adds a few hours through UPI or net-banking, or up to a working day for NEFT and RTGS outside cut-off windows. A sale on Friday generally settles by Monday or Tuesday.

Are there extended trading hours for F&O?

+

No. Equity F&O matches the cash market session of 09:15 to 15:30 IST. Commodity contracts on MCX trade longer and vary by contract, so energy and metals positions may run into the evening. Check the specific contract before assuming a close time.

What happens to my order during an exchange halt?

+

The order stays pending until trading resumes, or expires if it carries a day validity. Stop-losses cannot trigger through a halt, so a gap in price becomes a gap in your fill. Position sizing that accounts for this is more useful than any stop-order setting.
